Rain and hail storms battered Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, yesterday afternoon (Feb 9).

Footage shows the powerful downpours as balls of frozen ice crashed onto roads, reducing visibility for drivers battling through the hail.

The Meteorological Department said that the weather will become colder with the temperature dropping to low as 15 to 20 degrees Celcius while in the mountains, the temperature dropped to between five and 13 degrees Celcius.

It was the first rain storm after several weeks of cool, dry weather during the colder winter season.
