A ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ couple escaped from prison by reaching through the bars to unlock the door before running away.
The wife, Kanikarn Rewthongchoom, 36, picked the lock of her jail cell using a short metal rod at a police station in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand on February 25.
When she was finally out, she sneaked out of the gate and joined her younger husband Patikarn Thongnongsuan, 22.
The pair, previously arrested for robbery, casually walked out together before the husband was seen stealing one of the motorbikes parked outside.
CCTV footage shows the husband jumpstarting a red Honda Wave motorbike where his wife rode pillion before fleeing the scene.
Police officers noticed the couple were missing and searched for them around the area but without success.
However, the bungling thieves were identified after they crashed their scooter and were admitted to a Maharat Hospital following the accident.
Officers were able to trace them while they were receiving treatment from the hospital on March 3.
The couple were taken back to the police station after they were discharged from the hospital.
Charges against the couple for allegedly stealing the getaway bike and escaping from custody are now being prepared.
One of the police officers handling the case said patikarn had been arrested before for killing a person and stealing.
Lieutenant Colonel Udon Khadkaew said: ‘We are still investigating the case but we are looking to their other violations. We found out that the husband was an accused in a murder case before.’
