This is the eerie moment dust storms darkened the sky in Jaipur, India, on Tuesday afternoon (March 30).

Footage shows the dark clouds of dirt and dust engulfing the northwestern state capital city as concerned locals looked on.

Dust storms are caused when strong wind whips through an area that has been ravaged by dry weather and drought. The gusts then collect pieces of dried soil and earth that have broken away from the ground’s surface before picking them up and clouding the air.

The state of Rajasthan is home to the inhospitable Thar desert. It shares a border with Pakistani and the Indian provinces of Punjab, Haryana and New Delhi.
