This is the dramatic moment a driver crawled from a crashed pickup truck with flames raging behind him.

Phuwadol Phonchamnan, 19, lost control of the vehicle and smashed into a tree in Ratchaburi province, central Thailand on April 6.

Like a scene from an action movie, Phuwadol clambered from the wreckage as it exploded in a ball of flames.

Footage shows him crawling to safety as the 30ft high flames raged behind him. Locals helped him before paramedics arrived.

Onlooker Suphaphon Khamtep, 49, said: ‘I heard a loud bang so I went outside to see what it was. I was shocked when I saw the flames engulfing the car.

‘It then exploded followed by burning cans of insect repellant being ejected from the vehicle. Some people were scared and hid behind houses and buildings.

‘A few moments later, the driver crawled out and paramedics rushed to help him. He was given first aid treatment before being taken to the hospital.’

Investigators said the crash caused the vehicle to catch fire, which ingnited flammable insect repellents that were being carrier in the back.

Firefighters arrived to extinguish the blaze which was declared out after almost two hours. The driver, Phuwadol, was taken to hospital to be treated burns.

Police said that the road had become notorious for car accidents resulting in a number of deaths over the years.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Wirot Charoenjai said: ‘This road claimed the lives of several drivers before.

‘In this accident, the driver was carrying cans of insect repellent from Bangkok to a supermarket in Ratchaburi province.

‘The driver fell asleep while travelling and crashed into a metal barrier after spinning and drifting for around 50 metres.’
