Terrifying footage shows a swollen river submerging a bridge and trapping residents in the Philippines.

Ryan Uy was about to cross the bridge with neighbours when there was a sudden flash flood in Calinan, Davao City on April 11.

The resident said they had to wait for an hour before the water receded but the bridge was still submerged under muddy water when they could finally cross.

He said: ‘We thought it was just going to be a regular summer storm but the rain was too heavy and some of us were stranded when we went outside.’

The Davao region in southern Philippines experienced heavy rains and thunderstorms last weekend due to easterly winds blowing from the Pacific.

Officials from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office had distributed relief goods to 1,130 affected families in the region.
