Shocking aftermath of sinkhole that swallowed cars in Italy

This was the shocking aftermath of a sinkhole which swallowed cars and trees in Naples, Italy, on Friday morning (Jan 8).

Smoke can be seen rising from the pit as car lights flash from the depths. Several road signs were also dragged into the abyss.

Firefighters rushed to the scene of a giant sinkhole which opened up in the hospital car park shortly before sunrise. Residents heard an almighty crashing sound which they said ”sounded like an explosion”.

The enormous hole swallowed cars and tress when the ground collapsed, forcing patients to be evacuated and the electricity to be cut off.

Firefighters said several cars plunged into the sinkhole, which was around 500 square metres (5,400 square feet). Nobody was injured.
