Footage shows the deserted scene on a once-busy tourist street in Bangkok as Covid-19 cases surge again in Thailand today (April 24).
The video was filmed on Sukhumvit Soi 4 in the centre of the Thai capital, where hundreds of bars and nightclubs are located and hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers would usually visit.
All of the venues were ordered to close earlier this month following an outbreak of Covid-19 cases linked to the Thong Lor district of the city. They are now struggling with the financial impact of the pandemic on tourism, which has been rescued to almost zero following the introduction of travel restrictions in March 2020 when the coronavirus first began spreading rapidly outside of China.
Thailand has seen record Covid-19 cases in recent weeks following an outbreak linked to nightclubs and coyote bars, which were visited by politicians, diplomats and leading business figured.
Officials have now put 18 provinces as ‘red zones’ with 59 still at risk of an increase in infections. The country has recorded 2,839 new cases on Saturday (April 24) and eight deaths, taking the total number of infections recording since the pandemic began to 50,952 with 125 deaths as of April 24.
