Footage shows school buildings submerged in floodwater from heavy rain caused by the northeast monsoon in the Philippines.

Teacher Mary Joy Valledor went to the building to collect some teaching materials in Catanduanes province but she was stranded after the ankle-deep muddy water started to rise on January 9.

She said: ‘I hope everyone was safe. Some of the books were wet after the rain but I could not save them all.’

Heavy rain has been battering the region since last month and has caused floods which have submerge several provinces in the Bicol region.

The state weather service said the continuous rain was caused by a frontal system and the surge from the northeast monsoon.
