This is the shocking moment an electric bike burst into flames inside a lift in China.

CCTV footage shows the two-wheeler emitting thick, white smoke before being engulfed in fire in Hefei City, Anhui province on May 10.

Moments before the blaze sparked, the lift doors opened upon reaching the ground floor so the two passengers were able to escape unscathed.

The fire lasted for almost a minute before it was put out on its own inside the enclosed space of the elevator.

After the incident, police arrived at the residential building to investigate and said that the fire started on the bike’s lithium battery.

One of the officers said: ‘The lithium battery sparked fire after being triggered by vibration as it was not attached firmly on the bike.’

China Bicycle Association and Bike Europe date estimated that there were around 265 million e-bikes being ridden in China, about 10 million in Europe, and at least 1 million in the U.S.

A similar explosion happened Chengdu City on May 10 when an electric bike was also being carried in a lift. Footage shows the two-wheeler emitting thick, white smoke as the elevator doors closed before igniting in the middle of residents, injuring five people including a five-month-old baby girl.
