Thailand’s Khao San Road deserted as Covid-19 continues to stop tourism

Footage shows the deserted scenes on Khao San Road in Bangkok, Thailand, today (May 14).

The street – one of the city’s best-known attractions – would normally be full of backpackers and tourists from around the world.

However, travel restrictions imposed in March last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic have meant that the area has been eerily quiet for more than a year.

Hopes of tourists returning were dashed with the emergence last month of more Covid-19 infections in Bangkok which sparked mass closures of bars and restaurants.

Ministers hope that a vaccine roll out could allow travellers to return to the country, which relies on tourism for between 10 per cent and 18 per cent of its entire annual GDP.
