Footage shows piles of snow lining roads in Madrid, Spain this morning (Jan 14).

Oton Penuelas recorded the unusually chilly scene as he drove to work. He said: ‘This was the consequences of snow storm in Madrid. It is very rare to have snow in Madrid, so neither the city nor the citizens are prepared for it.

‘In the video I show the inconvenience I found on a road that was supposed to have been cleared of snow. Unfortunately, it wasn’t clean and my car was to low to pass through. I had to drive over the little snow mountains, avoiding the wheels’ path, otherwise, I would have been stuck.’

Spain – in the grip of an unusual cold snap – has recorded temperatures of -25C after a snowstorm.

Officials have warned the elderly to stay at home and many roads are too dangerous for cars.

At least seven people have died due to the weather, including two homeless people in Barcelona.
