Police arrested an alleged sex toy seller in Bangkok after customers complained about the ‘inefficient’ products – with one vibrator exploding.
Officers seized hundreds of assorted adult vibrators, dildos, lubes and other items including rings and plugs from the home of Taweesak Chaithaweep, 28, in the Thai capital on June 9.
Police said they were flooded with complaints from unsatisfied customers so they set up a sting operation and posed as a woman to order a pink vibrator. They then followed the delivery rider back to Taweesak’s property the same same.
Taweesak was arrested and allegedly admitted to secretly selling items online to interested buyers as sex toys remained to be banned in Thailand.
One of his furious customers, Maynarin Somsuk, took pictures of a vibrator she bought online which later burst into flames, leaving it charred and damaged.
She said: ‘I was using the virbator then smoke started coming from the wire. I could smell burning and it just exploded. It was so dangerous. I’m angry that I spent money and it broke. It could have really hurt me.’
Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) officer Police Major General Natthasak Chaowanasai said they started investigating the online shop, which was run through the messaging app Line, after previous customers complained about the quality of the toys.
He said: ‘Some buyers were not satisfied about the quality of the products. These complaints reached us so we started an investigation.’
The search warrant was issued by the Phrakhanong Criminal Court on June 8 so they could search the seller’s home where they found the kinky arsenal of illegal toys.
All of the seized adult toys were taken to the CPPD’s facility to use as evidence for the ongoing investigation while Taweesak will be charged with violating the Consumer Protection Act for selling unregistered goods.
Police Major General Natthasak added: ‘We want to warn consumers that sex toys are still illegal as there is no law to permit selling them in the country.
‘These products could also be harmful for the buyers since they have not been checked by medical institutes after having been smuggled in the country.’
