Footage shows residents protesting against the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, today (July 23).

Opposition to the sporting event – which was postponed a year due to Covid-19 – has grown due to the rise of infections across the country.

Police and security officers are monitoring the demonstrations on the day of the opening ceremony, with many residents calling for the games to be cancelled.

Economist Andrew Zimbalist from Smith College estimated that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) could lose up to $4 billion in broadcast revenue if the games are cancelled.
