This is the shocking moment a cargo ship crashed into a bridge as vehicles were driving over it in southern China.

The barge was carrying tonnes of sand while passing through the Houzishi Bridge when it slammed into the pier in Changsha, Hunan province’s Xiangjiang river on July 23.

Black smoke could be seen pouring from the ship before it continued to move past the bridge where there was busy traffic overhead.

No one was reported hurt from the incident but authorities were still investigating the cause of the collision. The bridge was reportedly in a stable and safe condition.

An onlooker from a nearby apartment building said: ‘I was watching the view outside my windows when the ship hit the bridge. It looked dangerous because there was smoke.’

One lane of the bridge had been temporarily closed while safety monitoring teams were dispatched on the bridge for further assessment.
