This is the moment Thai police raided a secret drinking party with foreigners in the basement of a bar despite a liquor ban.

Officers searched the establishment after it was reported to illegally sell alcoholic drinks to guests in Pattaya, Thailand, on July 26.

The revellers – 11 of whom were foreigners including one Thai local – were caught occupying the basement where chairs and tables were provided for drinking.

Those arrested were then taken to the Song Prue Police Station for questioning while they wait for Covid-19 test results.

Police Colonel Chitdecha Song Room said: ‘We received complaints from neighbours that foreigners come here at night to drink. We checked the place and confirmed the reports. We are still investigating the incident.’

Economists have warned that it could be another five years before the country’s tourism industry returns to pre-pandemic levels.

Two years ago tourism made up an estimated 21 per cent of Thailand’s GDP, generating 1.8 trillion baht in revenue. However, the country’s National Economic and Social Development Council predicted that it could be another five years before similar numbers are seen.

Analysts said that between now and 2026, around seven million workers will continue to be affected by the economic harm from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thailand has recorded 561,030 Covid-19 cases and 4,562 deaths as of July 29 – with cases rising dramatically throughout this month.
