Taiwanese Olympics badminton champion Tai Tzu Ying received a fighter jet escort and flare display as she and other athletes arrived home in Taiwan.

The Olympian recorded the hero’s welcome, showing fighter jets hovering near their plane and setting off flares to signal their return on August 4.

She said: ‘It’s the first time I saw it with my own eyes. It’s so cool.’

Tzu Ying won silver in the women’s badminton singles competition, being bested by China’s Chen Yufei.

Taiwan has posted a record-breaking medal haul at the Tokyo Olympics this year, winning two golds, four silvers, and five bronzes for a total of 11 medals thus far.
