Smoke rises from fire at Covid-19 vaccine plant in India

A fire broke out a factory producing the Covid-19 vaccine in India today (Jan 21).

Flames ripped through the fourth and fifth floors of the Serum Institute of India facility in Pune in the state of Maharashtra.

The firm is involved in producing Covid-19 vaccine Covishield which was developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca.

Local media reported that the fire had started in a part of the plant away from where the vaccine was being developed.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Namrata Patil said the blaze started at around 2:45pm.

He said: ‘As per the primary information, three people have been evacuated.’
