A worker died while another was injured after a sixty-year-old bridge due for demolition collapsed in the Philippines.
Joyco Failma, 30, and her colleague Dexter Orapa, 37, were reportedly retrieving metal from the underside of the Ebreo Bridge in Digos City, Davao del Sur on September 4 when the bridge caved in and buried the two.
Footage recorded by onlookers shows emergency workers retrieving the victims who fell into the water. Joyco was killed while Dexter is in a stable condition and currently recovering in a hospital.
Public Works and Highways Davao Information Officer Dean Ortiz said the two-lane Ebreo Bridge had been closed to vehicular traffic since May 2020.
He added: ‘The bridge was set to be demolished and replaced by a three-way lane bridge when the accident occurred. We are investigating why it collapsed.’
Authorities are now investigating the cause of the incident.
