A severe hailstorm pelted several districts in China’s capital Beijing on Tuesday evening.

Footage shows ice raining down on the northern districts of Yanqing, Shunyi, and Changping on September 7 evening. Pebble-sized hailstones showered parked vehicles and littered roads and residential areas.

The Beijing Meteorological Agency issued yellow hail warning signals across the northern part of Beijing, advising locals to take necessary precautions.

Hail forms when storm updrafts bring raindrops to colder areas in the atmosphere. Liquid water that freezes upon contact cause hailstones to grow in size.
