Heavy rainfall due to Typhoon Chanthu swamped a shopping mall in southern China on Monday.

Footage shows people being evacuated from the Guangnan Shopping Mall in southwestern Yunnan province on September 13.

Chanthu, which has been downgraded from a super typhoon on Sunday, remains a formidable storm, packing winds of more than 170 km/hr near its centre. Residents of Shanghai and nearby coastal regions have been warned to brace for strong winds and intense rains as the typhoon bears down on China’s eastern portion.

The Shanghai local government announced that all flights in Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao Airport have been cancelled on Monday. Authorities have also cancelled classes and ordered the suspension of mass transit lines in the city’s southern districts on Monday and Tuesday.

Chanthu is expected to weaken further before tracking northeast towards Japan and South Korea.
