Hundreds of wild birds fell from the sky and dropped dead on a cemetery floor in Bali.

Dead flocks of black sparrows were seen littering the floor of a burial ground in the island’s Gianyar Regency right after it rained on September 9.

Officers from the local Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) initially believed that the birds died from natural causes such as acid rain.

A follow-up investigation was conducted on September 10 where they found that the birds could have died of inorganic pesticide poisoning but the cause of death was not yet concluded.

BKSDA spokesperson Prawono Meruanto said: ‘f we’re talking about the condition and natural events, it can be said that there was a lot of acid during the rain.

‘It’s possible that that caused the birds to fall. It’s strange how it could have happened. This was the first time we have seen this on our island.’

Meanwhile, local animal health department spokesperson Made Santiarka said extreme and changing weather may have contributed to it.

He said: ‘The birds may have fallen due to extreme weather. It rained heavily before it happened.’

A team from the BKSDA is now conducting field research on the incident as investigations are ongoing.
