An elderly stroke patient was rescued after her home was submerged in a flood during typhoon Conson in the Philippines.
Leonila Litargo, 58, retreated to the second floor as she suffered from weakness in her muscles while water swamped her shanty in Binan City, Laguna province on September 8.
Her husband Epifanio then called the emergency responders for help during evacuation as the man could not carry his sick wife across the deluge on his own.
Officers then trooped through narrow, flooded alleys to reach the couple’s dwelling and moved her to a nearby evacuation centre.
An officer from the Binan City Police said: ‘Our team were patrolling and continuously conducting relocation of the locals to the evacuation centres when it happened. Truly, the spirit of unity was felt during these trying times.’
The team initially had trouble manoeuvring through the cramped space but were able to safely get Leonila out, carrying her piggyback to a nearby school being used as a temporary shelter.
Soon after, officers were able to take the stroke patient from the second floor of the house together with her husband and three children.
The family will stay together with other evacuees at the shelter until the weather condition improved. Health assessment and other basic were also provided in the centres.
The Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods which cause rivers to flow faster and become dangerous.
