A hero bus driver in China rescued a woman trying to jump off a bridge while carrying her son in an alleged suicide attempt.
The worker was driving along a road in Guangzhou, Guangdong province on October 21 when he spotted the woman acting strangely on the side of the road. Harrowing footage shows the distressed lady carrying her son before trying to jump off the Zhujiang bridge.
The quick-thinking bus driver named Zhang pulled over and leapt from his seat. He managed to stop the woman before she could launch herself from the bridge guardrail.
He said: ‘I didn’t think much and acted on reflex at the time. When I watched the video, I saw that I was moving so fast.’
Concerned passengers helped pull the boy and his mother into the bus.
Zhang added: ‘The woman was very emotional at the time, and the child was also scared and started to cry. I used a gentle tone to comfort them and tell them not to be afraid.’
The bus driver contacted the police to hand over the mother and son, and answer questions for the investigation. They are now reportedly safe and the mother is being checked over by medics, according to state media Xinhua news.
