Dashcam footage shows a gray haze severely hampering visibility at a toll road in the Chinese capital. The Beijing Municipal Meteorological Bureau issued an orange fog warning – the second-highest in its four-tiered, colour-coded alert system – as visibility in some districts dropped to as low as 100 metres.
US-based research firm Rhodium Group said China, which uses coal as its main power source,contributed 27% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions last 2019. Despite the country being plagued by poor air quality and heavy pollution, it has increased coal production in recent weeks to avert a looming power crisis as winter comes.
