A dog that had reportedly been living in a cave for six years was rescued in southwestern China.

The canine was reportedly surviving off of food scraps thrown by villagers into the cave in Qujing, Yunnan province before it was retrieved in the two-week rescue operation.

The rescuers rappeled down the 50-metre-deep cavern to save the pooch. However, since it retreated into a narrow gap that they could not reach, they had to wait for equipment to pull it out safely.

Video taken on November 28 shows the stray inside a cage being hoisted out of the cave, which was littered with bits of accumulated rubbish.

The dog is now in a good condition and will be adopted by a rescuer named Liu Wubing.
