‘Zombie fish’ spasms in bowl after being cooked

This is the bizarre moment a ‘zombie fish’ spasmed as if alive after being cooked in China.

Video taken in Zhengzhou City in the province of Henan on December 9 shows the dead sea creature thrashing violently inside a metal bowl.

The man who shot the video said: ‘The fish didn’t move while it was being fried, but it moved again when it was in the bowl. I’ve never seen this before so it shocked me.’

A feature on Discovery News said the strange phenomenon can happen when the animal is freshly killed. Brain activity has ceased, but the muscle tissue can still respond to external stimuli such as salt or heat, which can cause them to move.
