Ten people were killed when a speedboat capsized in rough seas off the coast of Malaysia this morning December 15.
The speed boat, said to have been carrying illegal immigrants from Indonesia, reportedly overturned due to bad weather.
First Maritime Admiral Nurul Hizam Zakaria, Johor State Maritime Director, said the incident occurred at 4:30 am in the waters of Tanjung Balau in Johor State’s Kota Tinggi town.
He said: ‘Based on the reports we received, there were 60 illegal immigrants on the boat.’
The bodies of six men and four women drifted onto shore after the vessel capsized. Their personal belongings – photos, wallets, and clothing – were strewn about on the beach after the accident.
Officers have confirmed that there were 21 survivors. Meanwhile, search and rescue operations are still ongoing for the 29 others who are missing.
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency said it has dispatched an aircraft and two patrol boats to track them down.
